St. Paul Public Schools Foundation to close

Mar 9, 2016 by

The nonprofit organization that has supported St. Paul Public Schools for 20 years, most recently with tutoring and eye care for students and grants to teachers, is dissolving after years of financial struggles.

The St. Paul Public Schools Foundation has stopped fundraising and reduced its staff to only what’s necessary to operate its tutoring program through the end of the school year. Board chair Jamice Obianyo said she expects the foundation to run out of cash in June.

“I’m personally very proud of the accomplishments we’ve been able to do overall,” she said, but “we believe (dissolution is) definitely the responsible decision moving forward.”

The foundation’s expenses more than doubled in four years, reaching $1.75 million in 2014.
