Success Beyond School – What Students Are Often Missing Out On

There are many criticisms against the modern educational system. But while many are focused on the notion that kids are being overloaded with information that’s ultimately irrelevant in their lives, some seem to be ignoring the other side of the coin. The lack of attention towards certain specific areas is just as problematic, if not more. Unfortunately, not everyone seems that concerned with this aspect of our current system.

The final result can be seen on a daily basis. People of all walks of life look like they are severely lacking in some areas that others consider common sense. And when these people make it into leadership positions and other important roles, this can significantly complicate things for those around them.

Learning to Learn

More and more resources point towards the unpleasant fact that many people leave schools without the basic ability to learn new information efficiently. They go through their lives banging their heads against new challenges, feeling like others are overtaking them without any effort. And in some cases, that is indeed happening. When a person lacks the foundation for learning new information correctly, it can take them more effort to get through certain materials.

This is valid through the entire educational system, not just at the basic level. University students can benefit from an improved ability to learn and retain new information just as well as their younger peers. In fact, given the level of challenge people typically face at that point of their education, it can be argued that it’s even more important to pay attention to that then.

Navigating the Job Market

Many people leave college without any actual idea of how the job market works and what’s expected of them. Looking for a job can be a dreadful experience for someone with nothing under their belt. This is made even more difficult by the fact that some aspiring young professionals don’t even know the first thing about building their CV correctly and presenting themselves in a marketable way.

Some higher-level educational programmes do touch on that, but briefly. There is a noticeable need for younger professionals to be educated about the expectations of the world towards them on a more fundamental level. It may require a fundamental reform in some aspects of education, but it’s critical at this point.

Leadership and Management Skills

This can also be extended to those who find themselves in a position where they’re responsible for the progress and development of others. First line management training is not something one would typically learn in university, save for some specific degrees. And that doesn’t make much sense nowadays, considering how many people eventually land in positions where they have to lead others.

Thankfully, this is an issue that companies can correct to a large extent with resources they have available nowadays. First line management courses are widely available on the modern job market, and the course from for first line managers is perhaps the best entry into the field. This is their most popular option and runs across 2 days – the modules covered include improving communication skills and learning how to manage both yourself and your team. Prior experience is largely irrelevant here, the important thing is that the person has the willingness to evolve their skills and push themselves further. If you’re in charge of your company, you should be very selective about who gets to lead others, but you should also do your best to promote additional training and education among your current leaders.

Advanced Social Skills

Another angle worth considering is the ability of the average modern person to progress in their field based on social skills alone. This used to be something very common among all kinds of professionals, but lately it seems to have fallen out of focus. With so many members of the new generations actively involved with their computers and social media, it’s becoming harder and harder to focus on actual, personal interactions. And that’s a big problem for many organisations, because it can severely affect the performance of the company as a whole.

It’s not just about small talk. Having people with inadequate social skills in an organisation can be a bottleneck for the overall process in many ways. It’s important for everyone to pay attention to how they’re handling themselves in this regard, and what they’re bringing to the table. And it’s just as important for managers to encourage the right kind of behaviour in this aspect.


We already touched on this briefly above, but it’s important to expand. There is a bit of a discrepancy between professionals nowadays in the way they handle technology. It looks like lately, people have largely started to fall into two main groups – those who use technology too much, and those who don’t have a good grip on it. We already explained how the former can be problematic, but it’s important to remember that not paying attention to current technological trends can be just as damaging to one’s profile in the long run.

Whether you like it or not, tech is all around us and it’s here to stay. Its involvement in our everyday tasks is only going to get more prominent in the near future, and this is something we must all prepare for. There is no longer a valid excuse for being behind the trends in terms of technological aptitude, and everyone has a responsibility to educate themselves on this topic. It can be argued that the modern educational system is not doing a lot to promote that, and this is probably true. But a change in this regard will take a long time to manifest.

These are all things worth considering for those who’re just starting to climb the professional ladder, as well as those in charge of their own employees. There is a lot of catching up that some have to do these days, and it’s important that we’re all on the same page with regards to our responsibilities in this situation. As we said above, it will take some time for things to start moving in the right direction, and it’s everyone’s responsibility to put some effort into that until then.
