SOCIAL STUDIES CURRICULUM STANDARDS STREAMLINING – K-12

The First Reading of the Texas Social Studies Curriculum Standards (TEKS) Streamlining will be at the Sept. 11 – 14, 2018 SBOE meeting.

Because a full revision of the Science and Social Studies TEKS is not due for several more years, the elected members of the Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) responsively took on a mid-cycle streamlining of Science and Social Studies —

The goal is to have fewer and clearer Science and Social Studies TEKS that are teachable in the allotted time without diluting the rigor of the standards. Because the intent of streamlining is to reduce and not add content to the present Social Studies TEKS, no additional standards are to be added.

The newly streamlined and completed Science TEKS will be used in Texas classrooms and in state testing beginning this fall (Sept. 2018).

At the Sept. 11- 14, 2018 SBOE meeting, the Board will be voting (first reading) on the work of the review committees in streamlining the Social Studies TEKS —

Second reading and final passage will be at the Nov. 13 – 16, 2018 SBOE meeting.

Donna Bahorich is encouraging community members and experts in the field of social studies to read through “Work Group E Drafts
” —  https://tinyurl.com/y7dnocbh and send their comments, concerns, or amendments by Sept. 7, 2018 to:   teks@tea.texas.gov

Email subject line: SOCIAL STUDIES TEKS STREAMLINING WORK GROUP FEEDBACK

The public hearing on the streamlined Social Studies TEKS is Sept. 11, 2018, 9:00 A. M.

SUGGESTION FROM CHAIR BAHORICH:  On any recommended amendment you e-mail for the SBOE to consider, please submit your rationale supporting each of your statements. Presenting your compelling reasons is important to help you achieve success on your amendment recommendations.

LANGUAGE ARTS TEXTBOOKS

The SBOE’s work last year included the final approval of a full revision of English / Language Arts/Reading (ELAR) curriculum standards (Spanish Language Arts) — K – 12.  These can be found at:
http://ritter.tea.state.tx.us/rules/tac/chapter128/index.html

The Board will approve the Language Arts textbooks (a.k.a., instructional materials – IM’s) for Grades K – 8 at the Nov. 13 – 16, 2018 Board meeting.

The new ELAR/TEKS K – 12 are in effect this fall; the high school textbooks (IM’s) will be considered next year.
