There are different combinations of materials used as electrode and electrolyte in rechargeable batteries. For example, Lithium-ion, Nickel-cadmium, Nickel-metal hydride. A rechargeable battery is stainable energy storage that can be used for a longer period. It is also less hazardous for the environment compared to disposable batteries. Although rechargeable batteries are expensive than disposable ones, they give a good return on investment.

Application of Rechargeable Batteries:

Rechargeable batteries are widely used in different areas, and some of its applications are given below:

Electric Vehicles:

The most commonly used battery in electric vehicles is lithium-ion, which is a type of rechargeable battery. A lithium-ion battery is a combination of lithium metal oxide and graphite. It uses lithium metal oxide as cathode and graphite as an anode. A porous sheet of polyolefin is used as a separator between cathode and anode. Carbonate solvents and lithium hexafluorophosphate is employed as an electrolyte.  

Lithium-ion battery has a high energy density ranging from 100 Wh/kg to 300 Wh/kg. Electric cars use multiple lithium-ion batteries to get ample storage for electricity. Different automobile companies like Tesla, BMW, Nissan, and Renault use lithium-ion batteries in their cars.


UPS (Uninterrupted Power Source) mainly uses two types of rechargeable batteries, nickel cadmium, and lead acid. Nickel-cadmium battery is used in low-voltage situations, and the most commonly used is the lead-acid battery. These batteries charge quickly to store ample electricity to be used in case of power outages. The lead-acid battery used in UPS is categorized into three types:

  •  Wet Cell:

It is the basic lead-acid battery that releases gases while charging and discharging. A wet cell lead-acid battery frequently needs the addition of water to the electrolyte.

  • Maintenance Free:

It is the specially designed wet cell battery that does not require the addition of water during its life.

  • Sealed Maintenance Free:

It is the most widely used lead-acid battery that only allows venting of gases due to high internal pressure.

A lead-acid battery is more cost efficient than Nickel Cadmium as it is lesser in price and is low-maintenance.

Digital Camera:

There are two types rechargeable batteries commonly used in a digital camera, lithium-ion and nickel metal hydride. As lithium-ion contains the latest technology, it is the more popular choice. The power of a lithium-ion battery is equivalent to nickel metal hydride battery, but weight is 15-35% lesser.

The lithium-ion battery is not affected by memory charging, and there are no power losses. The discharging of the lithium-ion battery used in digital cameras is also affected by temperature.


Different types of rechargeable batteries used in flashlights are nickel metal hydride, lithium-ion, lead acid, and nickel-cadmium battery. The battery used determines the size, shape, weight, and run time of the flashlight. With the advancement in mobile phones, the batteries have also changed for the better. The most commonly used cell phone batteries are given below:

  • Lithium-Ion Battery:

Lithium-ion is the older type of cell phone battery compared to the lithium polymer battery. It has a similar chemical composition as a lithium polymer battery, but its energy density is higher. Lithium-ion battery contains an active protection circuit that keeps the battery cool and prevents overheating.

  • Lithium Polymer Battery:

Lithium polymer battery is the latest technology of cell phone batteries. As it does not require active protection circuit, it is small in size and light in weight. Lithium polymer battery has 40 percent better storage capacity than nickel metal hybrid battery.

Medical Equipment:

Rechargeable batteries have found application in different medical equipment. From electric wheelchairs to biomedical devices, rechargeable batteries are used everywhere. The most popular choice of rechargeable battery used in medical apparatus is a lithium-ion battery. It does not need to be removed from the device for charging. Rechargeable batteries have saved medical practitioners from a lot of inconveniences caused by a complex network of wires.

Rechargeable batteries have been used extensively for space programs from several decades. Space shuttles, satellites, and other equipment contain numerous rechargeable batteries. Previously, nickel cadmium battery was used extensively for energy storage in space, but now the lithium-ion battery has gained popularity. A lithium battery is an ideal choice for running complex operations in space due to its high power.
