“Update: Gathering Input on Student Testing and Accountability in Texas”

By Donna Garner

On 11.11.15, Gov. Abbott appointed Mike Morath as the chair of the Texas Commission on Next Generation Assessments and Accountability (NGAA).

Then about a month later on 12.14.15, Gov. Abbott appointed Mike Morath as the new Texas Commissioner of Education.

This meant that Morath could no longer serve on the NGAA, and Gov. Abbott appointed Andrew Kim (Comal ISD superintendent) to be the new chair of the NGAA.  Here is Andrew Kim’s contact information:  andrew.kim@comalisd.org – 830-221-2015.

The Governor appointed Stacy Hock to take Morath’s place on the Commissioner.  Hock is the co-owner of a financial services technology consulting firm and is also on the board of Texas Public Policy Foundation — http://www.texaspolicy.com/press_release/detail/tppf-announces-stacy-hock-as-newest-board-member

The Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) is continuing its schedule of holding a series of statewide “community conversations” (CC’s) to gather input from students, parents, educators, business representatives, and citizens.

Three of these “CC’s” have been held in Houston, San Antonio, and Austin. The next ones are scheduled for 6:00 P. M. to 8:00 P. M. in El Paso on Feb. 4, Edinburg on Feb. 11, Dallas on Feb. 17, Ft. Worth on Feb. 18, Kilgore on March 3, and Amarillo on March 16.

(Some of the dates and locations are tentative; and because of space limitations in various facilities, advanced registration could be required.)

Donna Bahorich (chair of the SBOE) appointed SBOE member Erika Beltran to be the SBOE’s representative to the NGAA.  Here is Ms. Beltran’s contact information:  http://tea.texas.gov/About_TEA/Leadership/State_Board_of_Education/Board_Members/SBOE_Member_District_13/

More information about the community conversations can be found at: http://tea.texas.gov/2804Commission.aspx

NGAA was authorized by the Texas Legislature in 2015 (HB 2804), and the Commission is to have its report ready by Sept. 1, 2016.
