Vanishing Books, Graduation Cards, Birthday Cards, and other items.

Michael F. Shaughnessy –

As most of you may know, certain people value books, and of course, graduates value graduation cards ( that often contain money ) and we all like to receive a birthday card on a very special day. People getting married also receive well wishes, and of course money in the mail.

Recently, I mailed two books to colleagues that apparently were “lost ” in the mail. Now I am not so sure- I am cutting and pasting the following so that people will exercise caution when sending cards, books, and especially money and technological devices in the mail. One can only wonder who is supervising the people who deliver cards, letters, and well, books in the mail.

Last summer, residents of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, complained to the U.S. Postal Service that they were not receiving graduation, wedding, birthday and sympathy cards. Now we know why: A U.S. postal carrier for the area admitted to stealing more than 6,000 greeting cards  filled with cash and checks. A test greeting card with a special transmitter helped reveal the thievery. Ebony Lavonne Smith, 20, pleaded guilty to theft or receipt of stolen mail on Sept.12 and will be sentenced at a later date.
