Veterans Day – and other things

Michael F. Shaughnessy –

Monday is Veterans Day- a day set aside to honor those who have given their lives for freedom, democracy, their county, and ultimately their families, friends and the U.S.

Veterans are a well trained, honorable group of people and those who are still with us need to be respected and appreciated. They are all around- working in schools, business and industries- some wearing hats indicating where they have served ( Korea ) and others reflecting the area in which they served ( Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard etc )

Yes, we should remember veterans but also the wives that have lost husbands, children that have lost fathers and or mothers, and the relatives and close friends whose lives have been impacted forever.

We should show our appreciation in some simple gesture- a handshake, a smile, some ” thanks for your service ” comment.  I was having breakfast with a veteran at a restaurant that shall remain nameless- but they are apparently offering breakfast to all military this Monday. I think this is a good thing and more stores and restaurants should engage in this kind of endeavor.

In closing, we can offer our thoughts and prayers for these veterans among us- and hope that those they have left behind are surviving and doing well.
