May 1, 2020 by

If you decide to have a career in public administration, you will have a wide area of interests and talents to cover. There are dozens of different career directions you can take, and when you not only have a first degree, but a master’s in the subject of public administration, the field is even more open. Read on to see what kinds of careers you could go into with a degree like this.

Government Jobs

After you have earned a degree like the TUW MPA degree online, one option is to work for the government. There are many different streams of work within the government that someone with a master’s in public administration would be able to apply for and do well in. These include many at the federal level, offering travel as well as job satisfaction. Some of these jobs include:

  • Policy advisor
  • Budget analyst
  • Constituent service jobs

Not only will you need a master’s degree for these jobs, but you should also have a deep interest in politics. If you don’t, you may find that these careers are not particularly interesting for you.

City Manager

Being a city manager essentially means you will need to supervise local government and keep a check on the day-to-day running of various departments. You will need at least a bachelor’s degree to apply for a job such as this, but a master’s will allow you to get ahead of the competition and give you a good head start to enjoy the work and succeed at it.

As a city manager you will find your job is extremely varied since you will be working with most, if not all, departments within the local government arena. This will include housing, crime prevention, senior care, design and development, the environment, garbage collections and much more.

Association Jobs

Associations are bodies that work with different special interest groups, professions, and trades. These include religious bodies and political groups. As a social executive — which is what you can become with a master’s in public administration — you will perform a variety of different duties which will depend on how big the association is and how many people are working in that department. You might, in other words, be tasked with one area, or you might oversee everything.

Some of the duties that you should be overseeing are creating goals for the members of the associations to reach, and rules that they should adhere to in order to stay safe and continue moving forward.

Did you know that public administrators are often elected to mayor? This is the ultimate goal for many who have chosen this specific career path, and although it may take many years of campaigning and building up trust with the public, once you have reached the office of mayor you will have a great deal of influence.

You will need to be a good leader, someone who is able to speak well in public, and you will need to be a good decision maker if you want to be a good mayor.
