Whose Names Should We Remember

Parents charged in Oxford school shooting plead not guilty to involuntary manslaughter

Michael F. Shaughnessy

By now, everyone has heard about the Oxford School Shooting. And Ethan Crumbley and James and Jennifer Crumbley’s names have been plastered all over the internet and television.

However, four students are dead:

Those students are Hana St. Juliana, 14, Madisyn Baldwin, 17, and Tate Myre who was 16. He died apparently in a Sheriff’s car en route to the hospital. Apparently the authorities did not feel they could wait for an ambulance.

Still another student Justin Shilling was 17 and he died at McLaren Oakland Hospital in Pontiac, Michigan.

All of these students had their entire lives in front of them. They probably had friends, and relatives, and neighbors and family members. They may have had a dog or a cat waiting for them to come home. We cannot even grasp the pain those parents, siblings, and perhaps their teachers also are going thru.

Others have been injured. We can look up their names online and hope and pray for them. We hope they recover. We do not know how they will be impacted in the long term. Perhaps they will be afraid to come to school. Perhaps they will have medical issues for the rest of their lives- or perhaps psychological or psychiatric or mental health issues for the rest of their lives.

Parents do have some responsibility for their children. Parents do have to have some culpability for their actions- and giving a gun to a 15 year old is somewhat suspect.

Is it gun violence, or it is poor parenting, or is it a societal breakdown or something else?

This is a sad way for all of those students at that school to end this school year.
