Women in STEM Education

STEM education is defined as an interdisciplinary approach that involves the coupling of rigorous scholarly ideas with real-world lessons through the application of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. It helps to build connections between schools, communities, workplaces, and the world. This helps STEM education and the ability to compete in the new economy to grow.

Stem books in stem education play a great role because they make students think outside of the box. They do not limit students to cramming material but make sure that the data has some application in the real world.

Women’s potential and expertise in STEM fields have historically been overlooked and undervalued on cultural and political levels. This is clearly a big problem, not only when it comes to having high-quality STEM workers but also when it comes to providing women a lot of great chances to move up in their careers in STEM.

  • Women are disproportionately underrepresented in the STEM workforce

Women have been discouraged from pursuing STEM majors since college. For example, they make up approximately 21% of engineering majors and about 19% of computer and information science majors.

Although women make up 80% of the healthcare workforce, only 21% of board members and health executives are female, and only about a third are physicians. Women are more likely to work in jobs that pay less, like home health aides, nurses, and pediatricians.

Only 38% and 24% of women who major in computer science and engineering work in their respective fields.

Men in STEM earn nearly $15,000 more per year than women ($85,000 vs. $60,828). Additionally, black women and Latinas in STEM earn approximately $33,000 less per year (on average, around $52,000).

  • Stereotypes of gender

STEM fields are often viewed as masculine. Teachers and parents frequently underestimate girls’ math abilities, beginning in preschool.

  • Cultures dominated by men

Fewer women work in STEM fields, which makes them seem rigid, exclusive, and male-dominated. This makes STEM fields unfriendly to women and minorities.

  • There are fewer influencers

Because female scientists and engineers are underrepresented in books, the media, and popular culture, women have fewer role models or influencers to inspire their interest in these fields. In math and science, there are even fewer black female role models.

  • Math Anxiety

Teachers, who are overwhelmingly female, frequently pass on math anxiety to their students. They frequently grade girls harder for the same work, assuming girls must work harder to achieve the same level as boys.

  • How to cope with the issues that women face in STEM education?

Following are some strategies that can help in coping with the issues that women face in STEM education:

  • We can solve this issue by adopting the following methods:
  • By breaking the stereotypes of gender and male-dominant culture,
  • Introduce more female role models to encourage stem education.
  • Also, encourage women who are working in this field and support them equally as men.
  • Overcome their anxiety and introduce and acquaint them with a comprehensive STEM book.

  • STEM books do more than just present facts or information.
  • They do not limit themselves to a single subject; they have
  • They don’t throw topics into a black hole.
  • They don’t avoid making connections with the physical world.
  1. As a result, once we understand what a STEM book is not, we can deduce what it is.

STEM books do the following: 

  • They encourage students to consider and practice problem-solving strategies.
  • They combine two or more STEM disciplines;
  • They present relevant subjects, they find a connection to reality,
  • And they assist students in connecting both the content and the practices or habits of mind associated with STEM fields.

So, women should also be encouraged to enroll in STEM fields as they have all the capabilities that men have. We can only prosper if we do not practice gender discrimination and provide equal rights to all men and women.
